The world is dying - scarce farmland is being fought over by orcs and a desolated human population, but now the two sworn enemy races find themselves in a tentative alliance against a more violent foe - the Vangol. In an effort to ally the races, Tara, a promising young healer and cousin to one of the most powerful orc overlords, is stationed with the human warrior Callum Battlechild and his group known as “The Last Men”. Their mission is to discover how the Vangol are finding their way so far in from the shores where they land, but to also secure the shrinking farmlands from further violence.
Master Rei tries to help Mira overcome her shyness and make new friends, but it seems Mira is only comfortable talking to cute animal-type creatures, rather than others her age. Later, Master becomes sick and their magic goes wild, so the roles are reversed as Mira takes care of her master for a change. Once Master is feeling better, the two get to work replenishing some of the Master's medicinal ingredients, and Mira is shocked to see the cost in labor and ingredients. Then, Stella, one of Master Rei's old friends, comes by and finally gets to meet Mira, who she only knows through Rei's letters. Stella is an inventor and has created many awesome things, including crayons that draw in the air. Lastly, Rei and Mira reminisce about when Mira first came to live with Master Rei and how they started on the path of finding a way to control her powers.

Asahi is leading the humans to war against the Draconians, all under the banner of saving a kidnapped Ruri. The fight is over before it begins thanks to the overwhelming strength of the Draconian fighters. Ruri still hasn’t confessed her true identity to the king, so Asahi’s repetitive accusation of kidnapping a human named Ruri bewilders most of the dragon court. After a botched attempt to escape the castle, Asahi starts to see what the world is like without her magic charming everyone, but she still doesn’t understand why people aren’t falling over themselves to help her. Ruri finally gets a moment of sweet closure by lecturing Asahi about her gullibility, but it may take several years of hard labor on Draconia’s prolific farm to sort everything out. |
